What you need to do now for marketing success in 2022

For the past few weeks I’ve been looking at my business and thinking about what I’d like to do in 2022 and what I’d like to stop doing. It’s a great time for a stocktake and then plan for the year ahead.

So let’s look at the future… but first, we need to reevaluate the past.

It’s important to look back and take stock so that you can focus on what worked and do more of it, but also, I want you to look at what you enjoyed and what you didn’t. Because there’s no point focusing on something that worked but you didn’t enjoy, unless you think you can learn to love it.

Ok, so now that we’ve looked back, here are some things that I believe will help you with your marketing in 2022.

Welcome to the New School of Marketing podcast. We’re so close to the end of the year and I’m really looking forward to some time off with my family.

I always think that it’s a bit funny that our brains really see it as the end of something. Like things completely stop and restart.

For the past few weeks I’ve been looking at my business and thinking about what I’d like to do in 2022 and what I’d like to stop doing. It’s a great time for a stocktake and then plan for the year ahead.

So let’s look at the future… but first, we need to reevaluate the past.

Look back at your year and ask yourself what worked well and what didn’t?

What did you enjoy and what didn’t you enjoy?

It’s important to look back and take stock so that you can focus on what worked and do more of it, but also, I want you to look at what you enjoyed and what you didn’t. Because there’s no point focusing on something that worked but you didn’t enjoy, unless you think you can learn to love it.

Ok, so now that we’ve looked back, here are some things that I believe will help you with your marketing in 2022.

1. Simplify your marketing strategy

Every year I think you should look at what worked and what didn’t in terms of your marketing and then ditch what didn’t work.

Effective marketing is really about how to generate leads and sales in the easiest way possible.

So if you’re focusing on every marketing tactic under the sun, you’re not only overwhelming yourself but you’ll also burn yourself out with things that don’t even work. Yes, there are many different ways to market yourself, and sometimes we need to make changes but it doesn’t mean that you need to do everything.

How can you market yourself in the most effective way?

What can you let go of and what should you focus on more?

2. Create a content strategy

Content is going to be very important in 2022.

I mean, it has always been important but it’s going to be even more important. And not just content for content’s sake.

Your content needs to be valuable and created with thought and intention. A few episodes ago, in episode 60, I spoke to Mel Daniels about content and taking the overwhelm out of content creation. Tune back into that episode because it’s full of gold. It’ll help you create great content with intention and purpose.

Also think about what your main medium is going to be?

Will it be a blog, a podcast, YouTube videos?

The idea is that you focus on one main content medium and then think about how you can amplify your core content.

For example, if you create a podcast, how can you then spread this podcast content further?

You can pull snippets from it and share it on your social media, you can create stories or reels that have a snippet of your core content, you can share it via your email marketing.

Think about how you can simplify your content creation process but amplify its power and reach.

Your content is going to be what’s going to set you apart next year, but it needs to be well thought out content.

3. Create connection

Another thing that’s becoming more important is connection.

I’ve seen this with my clients already. We can’t just run ads to a freebie anymore, it’s not working the way it used to.

The first step we take now is to create content that builds the brand and increases engagement so that we’re really connecting with the audience.

People are not into being part of a mass group anymore, they want personal connection so brainstorm how you can increase connection with your audience.

There are ways that you can invite connection with your audience. For example, you can invite them to DM you on Instagram. Of course you need to be available to respond to their messages.

You can offer something valuable to your audience that creates connection, for example weekly Facebook lives or Q&A sessions. Invite them to interact with you on a deeper level.

4. Focus on the foundations

Things have come full circle in my opinion. We’re going back to basics and the foundations are so very important.

Your message and the depth in which you know your ideal audience are going to be the pillars of your marketing.

There’s simply no space for anyone who doesn’t know their audience well and doesn’t have a well crafted message.

If this is something that you haven’t fully worked out and you’re not 100% crystal clear on who your audience is, what they want and how you can best talk to them… you need to go back to basics.

Focus on your foundations first before you use any gimmicks.

I’m also referring to using Facebook advertising.

It’s not going to work unless your foundation is solid, you know who your audience is and you have your message 100% dialed in.
